History of Miss Gail's Inn

Miss Gail's Inn was erected in 1905 and completed in 1907 by George Stone for Mr. Lair. The original name was the American Hotel and was erected around the railroad that came into the area to take fresh fruits and vegetables to the miners in the Colorado area.

The area that now houses the dining room and part of the quilt store was actually the original dining room.  Prior to construction of the hotel, Mr. Lair ran was known as "The Dining Hall" which was a local restaurant. As you can imagine back in the old west the hotel housed local folks for a time, till houses were built, and overnight guests that came in on the train or stagecoach.

The hotel originally had 15 to 18 rooms; but has gone through many renovations.  A major player in updating the American Hotel was Mabel Lester. Mabel was a local real estate agent and, at the ripe young age of 70, bought the American Hotel and then turned it into the Aztec Residential Hotel - yes, a boarding house.  With the help of a government grant, Mrs. Lester added private baths and kitchenettes to some of the rooms.  At the completion of the renovations, the hotel had eight rooms (five with kitchenettes), with a manager's living quarters and a small apartment added to the back of the older part of the home.  To Mabel's family's surprise, she kept the hotel for 20 years!

Mabel then sold the hotel to a young couple, John and Gail Aspromonte.  Gail met the daunting task of putting the hotel back together with a lot of love and enthusiasm.  John, still working full time, helped when he could.  The Inn took shape over time to its present charming condition.
